Unable to use micro SD card in my phone

.I have a 2 GB SD Card installed on my Galaxy Y but when I try to download any apps it tells me that the memory on my phone is full and refuses to download but I still have 1.89 GB of space on the SD card. Why can I not download directly to the SD card and save it there. When I connect the phone to my PC with the USB cable it tells me that I do not have a SD card installed but as soon as I diconnect the usb cable the SD card appears on my phone!!! When I look in the files the " send to SD card " option is greyed out why?? it seems that I cannot save or download anything to the SD card WHY. Please could someone tell me what to do. Thank you...
