Question

what support is there for a "car function" in the Galaxy SIII?

In the User Manual (R1.0 8th June) there is no explicit mention of any special car related function when u plug the S3 into the car dock/cradle.

The old S2 did have some such functionality though its user manual does not mention it either - I gather it asked what u wanted to do, allowing u to verbally tell it ie keeping your hands on the wheel and legal!

Found "TecTile Programmable NFC Tags" from Samsung (see http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ETC-TT1G6NGSTA) which can be programmed to, amongst many other things, launch a chosen app when u hold the S3 against them.

So if u stick one on the car dock/cradle it could be made to launch your satnav app automatically - no buttons (if phone can still fit the dock with sticker in place else stick it close by!). I guess it can also initiate the S3's "driving mode" too - so u get text to speech on call/message notifications etc.

The app doesn't have to be running to activate behavior, though from the reviews people wish it would be capable of doing more things (like launch app and turn on bluetooth though the documentation seems to imply that u can - at least for 'phone settings':

What kinds of tags can I make?
Settings & Apps:

Change Phone Settings
Make a tag to set your phone up the way you like it when you get to work, or when you get in your car.
You can even set an alarm time for a bedside tag. You can set individual settings, or combine settings
to optimize your phone for your location - at home, at work, in the car, or other places.
...

I guess we need upgrade to firmware and the app for more flexibility. Maybe bigger capacity tags?

Thus u do have a mechanism of sorts to get your phone behaving as a sat nav device in the car with no fiddling about with buttons. Now to get rid of the fiddle of plugging in your charger with a true car dock...

Came across a mention of S3's (and S2's) "driving mode" settings in user manual which control things like
o provide audible notifications (Text-to-speech) for incoming calls, messages, or event details
o view the text of a new message received
So it reads new messages to you?

This mode seems to be initiated manually by u pressing the notifications panel (UM page 33/34), though in S2's its car dock must also have kicked it off on docking - hence my previous post mentioning it asking what u wanted to do after docking. Perhaps the S3 does too, if it has a car-dock (see other question on this very subject).

If the speech recognition side of "driving mode" works then its better than even the HTC's new car mode that gives u simplified landscape interface when u dock phone but its (fat) finger driven. Would be nice if S3's auto-launched on docking too though.

Question

is there a car-dock accessory available from Samsung SIII

I know there is a Samsung passive car-cradle for the SIII - the Samsung Galaxy S3 Vehicle 'Dock' ECS-K200BE (details on mobilfun site)

This was mentioned in an answer from Support on this site under Reviews section about the SII's ECS-V1A2BE passive car-dock (when someone asked if it would work with the SIII, which it won't and they sent link to mobilfun site which is where I had googled it too)

1) But is there a true car-dock also planned for SIII?

ie one that plugs has a USB port that the phone clicks into as the ECS-V1A2BE is. Rather than the ECS-K200BE which is a passive car-cradle where u have to replug the charger lead in to the phone after u click the phone into the cradle. A dock can initiate car related functionality, whereas with a cradle it only knows a charger has been plugged in (asked in another question)

2) Also, are any plans on an active SIII car-dock - ie one with speakers/mic so we can hear the satnav over the roar of the engine at 90?

Question

can S3 act as a DLNA Mobile DM Controller (M-DMC)

[as defined by DLNA, see Wikipedia]

From the feature summaries I can gather that the S3 can act as a DLNA Mobile-DM Server (ie it serves out media stored on itself) or a Mobile-DM Player (ie it plays media from other servers). This is built on top of Android 4s support for Wifi Direct (ie adhoc) I think.

But, can the S3 act as a Mobile DMC (Controller)? - in that it sits between a DMS (like a PC with huge disks) and a DM Renderer (ie a Samsung TV) and the user picks content off Server and it plays on the Renderer by using the S3's screen. Or is that supported obtained via 3rd party apps - I see a few on some Android app stores.

Is there any web info on this for Samsung devices showing what does what with what? and what video codecs/frame rates work?

Question

What is the internal and external memory size available in the UK?

I am slightly confused as to the memory specification of the phone and the options available in the UK, from what I have read I see the following is available; 1gb system ram, 16gb - 64gb internal (built in) user memory and expandable (via MicroSD) memory 16gb - 64gb.

Is the internal and external memory the same thing?

The UK phone operators seem to only offer 16gb internal user memory version of the phone, when will the 64gb (built in) internal version be available in the UK?

Question

Why can't I set up my tiscali emails on this phone?

Go through email set up and it will not work. Vodafone say they have rung Samsung who say a software issue. WHEN will this be sorted? Pointless having a phone you can't run emails on these days. Very disappointed after all the hype of this great phone for it not to work.
